A medium HMX-SL frame with no shock installed now weighs 1,427 grams, painted. That number is the headline Scott wants you to see, and it undersells what actually changed. The 2027 Scott Spark RC geometry is a bigger story than the 197-gram diet, because Scott reshaped the front centre, shortened the rear, slackened the head angle, and rebuilt the suspension around a flex pivot while keeping the shock buried inside the down tube. This is the fifth generation of the bike that has won more World Cup XC races than anything else on a start line, and it reads less like a refresh than a reset.

The head angle range is not a typo. Scott ships the bike with cups that let you set the head angle in three positions across a full degree, and the exact figure lands slightly differently per size because fork trail shifts (roughly 120 to 123mm) with the front centre. Call it 65.9° in the middle of the range. That is about a degree slacker than the outgoing Spark RC, which is a large move for a cross-country race bike that lives at the front of a pack.
Wheelbase on the medium sits near 1,175mm. Bottom bracket drop holds at 45mm, and the rear centre is now a fixed 434mm on every size, a few millimetres shorter than before.
The reach jump is the real change
Look at the medium. The previous Spark RC put a size M rider on 441mm of reach. The 2027 bike gives that same rider 455mm. Fourteen millimetres is not a rounding error; it is the difference between a bike that feels cramped when you get out of the saddle and one that lets you weight the front wheel without folding your elbows.
The smaller sizes grew the most in relative terms, which is the correct direction. XC bikes have historically punished shorter riders with steep, short front ends that get nervous the moment the trail points down. Stretching the S and M front centres while keeping stack low gives those riders a longer lever over the front tire without turning the bike into a barge.
Pair the longer reach with the slacker head angle and you get more front-centre length and more mechanical stability at speed. For a discipline where courses now feature the kind of rock gardens that would have been enduro terrain a decade ago, that combination matters more than another 100 grams off the frame.
What the flex pivot actually does
Scott dropped the visible rear pivot. In its place is a short link rotating around the bottom bracket with the pivot sitting just below the crankset, and a flex zone built into the rear triangle that behaves like a four-bar linkage without the hardware.
The tuning is the interesting part. Through the first half of travel the rear triangle deflects only about 1mm, which keeps the early stroke supple and preserves rear-wheel traction on loose climbs. Push harder and the structure flexes another 5 to 6mm, adding support deeper in the travel so the bike does not wallow when you load it in a berm or slam into a compression. Scott also raised anti-squat so racers can run a bigger chainring, up to 40T, and still get a firm platform to sprint against.
The shock itself is a 190x45mm unit embedded deep in the base of the down tube, where the frame is already reinforced to handle pedalling loads. That placement pulls mass low and central, and a magnetic cover keeps it clean while still giving quick access to Flight Attendant battery and tuning controls on the electronic builds. It is a genuinely clever piece of packaging, and it is the visual signature that makes the Spark RC look like nothing else in the pits.
Seat angle, climbing, and the tall-rider question
At roughly 75.3° effective, the seat tube angle is steep enough to put your hips over the pedals on a sustained fire-road grind but not so steep that it cramps you on flatter terrain. Combined with the 45mm BB drop, the bike sits low and stable when you are seated and grinding, which is exactly where an XC race is won or lost.
Standing at 6’4″, the XL is where my attention goes, and the news there is mixed in a good way. Reach on the XL climbs to 505mm, which is finally a real tall-rider number rather than an afterthought, and stack rises toward 614mm at the top of the size, so you are not stuck slamming a tower of spacers to get the bar up. The fixed 434mm rear centre is the one asterisk. On a 505mm-reach frame, a 434mm back end leaves the weight balance slightly rearward compared with a size-specific chainstay layout, so taller riders should expect to actively weight the front in steep corners rather than letting the geometry do all of it. It is a small compromise on a bike this light, and the payoff is a rear end that stays snappy out of tight switchbacks.
If you are coming off an older Spark or a competitor’s XC bike, size on reach and stack, not on the letter. A rider who fit a large previously may find the new large’s 480mm reach is plenty, or may want the XL specifically for the taller stack.
Where it sits, and what it costs
The 2027 range spans eight builds. In Europe it runs from €3,799 for the Deore-equipped Comp up to €13,699 for the SRAM XX SL Eagle AXS SL model that hits a claimed 9.9kg. In the US, the ceiling is a $15,000 Spark RC SL and the floor is a $4,500 Comp. Frames come in three carbon grades: HMX-SL at 1,427g, HMX at 1,570g, and HMF at 1,793g, all medium, painted, without a shock. Pro-level builds and up get internal down-tube storage with a spare tube and multi-tool tucked inside.
Against its own family, the Spark RC is the pure race weapon; the softer-tuned Spark and the Contessa handle riders who want the same chassis with a calmer setup. Against the field, it lands in the same conversation as the Specialized Epic 8 and the Trek Supercaliber, both of which chase the full-suspension-that-climbs-like-a-hardtail brief from different angles. The Santa Cruz Blur and Giant Anthem round out the class. What sets the Spark apart is the integration: the hidden shock and flex pivot let Scott chase weight and a low centre of gravity at the same time, rather than trading one for the other.
